Our New Location

This summer we packed up the trucks and moved our offices to the top floor of a newly constructed building. The “Thomson Jaspar Building” is a four-storey structure with two levels of underground parking. Our floor was designed so that we could get exactly what we wanted and now everyone has their own office! We held an Open House in November and proudly showed off our new premises to friends and clients.

Paul Jaspar Retires

Hard to believe, but it’s true – Paul Jaspar is retiring at the end of 2011. On the evening of December 8, a celebration was held in his honour at the Top of the Inn downtown at the Sheraton Cavalier. The venue was great, the food was excellent and the speeches were both hilarious and genuinely heartfelt. Gifts included some great wines and artwork from the partners, and the staff presented Paul with a print of the Thomson Jaspar logo with a listing of all the staff hired during his time here, including over 120 names.

UFE Grad
Denille Heron graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a Masters of Professional Accounting (MPAcc) this summer. She wrote the Uniform Evaluation Exam (UFE) in November 2011 and became one of almost 2,900 students who passed the Canadian Chartered Accountants 2011 Uniform Evaluation this year – one of the world’s most challenging professional examinations. Denille will obtain her Chartered Accountant designation in 2012.

Fond Farewells

Our former Office Manager, Barbara McFadden, is heading west to Vancouver this September. Barb has been a constant source of advice and support for more than 16 years and she will be truly missed. The partners and the staff would like to thank Barbara for being part of the Thomson Jaspar team and wish her and her family all the best in Vancouver.

Kimberly Gulka applied to the College of Education this year, and she is pleased to announce that she has been admitted for classes beginning this September. Aptly named the “Goddess of Knowledge” by members of the administrative team, we will find it hard to replace her, but we all wish her the very best in her career ahead.

New Thomson Jaspar & Associates' Digs!

The partners are very excited to announce that the firm will be relocating in August 2012 to the top floor of a building that is currently under construction at the corner of 23rd Street East and Wall Street in the heart of the city's newly designated Warehouse District. It will be a 4-storey professional building with one level of underground, the complete ground floor and additional outside space all dedicated to parking. There is also ample parking on the streets surrounding the building, which the partners hope will alleviate some of the current parking challenges for their clients.
Note that the second and third floors are available for lease as of the writing of this article, so if the opportunity for space which will be ready for leaseholds to go in by the end of May or June 2012 is attractive to you, please contact Phill Elenko at ICR.

Winners Abound!
Showing off their predictive prowess, the women staff members and the partners won second and third place, respectively, in the BHD NHL regular season hockey draft, out of a field of 25 teams. Even the men staff members' team came in fifth, concluding a very respectable showing for our office. The women's team voted unanimously to donate all of the $500 winnings to Camp Easter Seal of the Saskatchewan Abilities Council to help send a deserving child to camp this summer.

Staff Anniversaries
In celebration of two important staff milestones, yesterday the partners and staff were all treated to lunch in the Garden Court Café in The Bessborough Hotel. Most of the attendees were surprised, but also happy, that the underground link between Avord Towers and the hotel was still functional as Mother Nature was treating us to yet another snowstorm (yes, it is March).
Gayle Zeiler and Lorraine McDonald have been with the firm for 25 years this year, but both assure us that they have many good years left! The partners expressed their sincere appreciation for these years of dedicated service. It is at times like this that we all reflect on the work and laughs that we have shared—some of the stories never fail to get old!

2nd Annual Staff Golf Event hits the Weather Jackpot
With very careful planning we were lucky to hold our 2nd Annual Thomson Jaspar & Associates Staff Golf Event on the very nicest day of the summer. Greenbryre Country Club held the afternoon golf tournament, run in Texas Scramble format (heavy emphasis on the "scramble" portion for some of the teams), while the evening barbeque and social was graciously hosted by Jan and Keith Thomson. There were many children in attendance to keep the energy level high, with the culmination of the evening being the awarding of the various golf prizes. Needless to say, the heavy favourites did indeed pull off the win, but they were only a shot or 2 ahead of their closest (and honest) challengers.

Family Income Splitting Loans
The Canada Revenue Agency ("CRA") recently announced that their prescribed rate of interest for the 2nd quarter of the year (i.e. from April 1, 2009 to June 30, 2009) will fall to 1%. This is the lowest interest on record and provides an excellent opportunity to save income taxes by splitting income with your spouse, children and grandchildren.

Holiday Festivities
Lots of fun and cheer were shared at the annual Festive Season Party held this year at the Golf "Clubhouse". Brian proved to us that it is possible to lose a golf ball even at a simulated golf course, and, holding with long-standing tradition, the new members of our staff treated the rest of us to a rousing rendition of Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer (after a false start on Hark the Herald Angels Sing).
